Directories were privately produced guides to traders and gentry in particular areas. They can provide valuable details about tradesmen, professionals, nobility and gentry, and occasionally about private residents and large farmers.
Both Pigot's and Slater's directories describe the towns and villages they include, noting churches, police stations, schools etc, and often naming public officials. Mayo towns are included in the following directories:
1784, '86 & 1803 -Wilson's Postchaise Companion
Describes 25 towns and villages of Mayo, noting local landmarks, public facilities and the seats (residences) of gentlemen and noblemen.
1812- Ambrose Leet's Directory
A directory of market towns, villages and other places noting prominent residents.
1814-Leet's Directory
As above with the addition of an index to persons. Also indexed in JNL.SMFHRL (1995) P. 34 –54

Covers all Mayo parishes, and major towns and villages.
Wilson's Postchaise Companion and Leet's Directories can be found in the NLI (J 9141 W13 & Ir. 9141 LI0 respectively). Both Pigot's and Slater's Directories are in the NUI and the Gilbert Library, and in other major libraries.
