Chapter 12. Gravestone Inscriptions

As the civil registration of deaths in Ireland only commenced in 1864, and few churches kept burial records, gravestones provide one of the very few pre-1864 sources of information about date and place of death. However, gravestones can also provide many other items of information of great value to the researcher.

Many gravestones provide only basic details i.e. the name of the deceased and the date of death. However, some are more detailed, and provide excellent biographical details about the deceased, and about other relatives not previously known. The graves of poorer persons, unfortunately, were often unmarked, or marked with wooden memorials. Gravestones are therefore not a source that can be expected for poorer ancestors

It should be remembered that Catholics, Methodists and Presbyterians have at all times been buried in Church of Ireland graveyards. Col graveyard and burial records should therefore always be checked, whatever the denomination of the family.

The information on Gravestone inscriptions and other memorials have been transcribed and published in many sources down through the years. Among the most notable of the groups involved was the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead (1888-1921) whose members and supporters transcribed records from hundreds of sites around Ireland. These were published in the Journal of the Association (JAPMD). The society was continued as the Irish Memorials Association after 1922. The memorials published by the JAPMD were selective, since they were generally dependent on contributions by individual members. In many cases transcriptions from a specific graveyard were published a couple at a time over several years in various volumes which

in many cases did not accumulate to provide a full set of transcripts. (see p. 75). c

There are over 120 graveyards in Co. Mayo of which only a fraction have been transcribed and published in some form to date. A full list of Mayo burial grounds and their caretakers can be obtained by writing to: Mayo County Council, Aras an Chontae, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. In recent years local genealogical and historical societies have been transcribing and publishing complete surveys of these graveyards. This has now become a common practice and local journals should be continually checked for new additions. In Mayo, the SMFHRC has been actively abstracting and publishing this information for years.

The inscriptions published to date by the JAPMD or the SMFHRC are:
